Rumors About Devynmature

Recommend

Nadia

I hadn't been expecting to see Dakota, and especially not Kacie and Brittany. Dad and I had decided to take Cole to an ice cream shop in town to try to get his mind off Devyn, but with irritatingly perfect timing, there were Kacie and Brittany. Frustrated, I watched with disgust as they waved us down.

"What do you want?" I asked, annoyed.

"We heard something," Kacie said, and she motioned for me to come closer.

"If you can't say it in front of my friends and family, then you have no right to say it," I shot back, knowing very well how Kacie's and Brittany's minds worked.

Brittany looked impatient. "Come on, Nadia. Don't be impossible."

"Impossible?" I exclaimed, on the brink of losing my temper.

I looked over at Dakota, who wasn't trying to mask his anger. I raised my eyebrows at him, but he refused to acknowledge me. So, the little brat - excuse me, brother - was still harboring anger at me for who knew what. Shrugging, I turned back to Kacie and Brittany. "What do you want?"

"Get in the car," Kacie said. She motioned toward the backseat. "Honestly, Nadia, it's really important."

Something about Kacie's tone made me think she was up to no good, but I looked over at my dad, friend, and brother. "I'm sorry," I said, voice apologetic, "but I'll be a minute."

Sitting in the backseat of the car, I leaned forward and stuck my head between Kacie and Brittany. "Okay, girls, what's going on?"

"It's about Devyn," Brittany replied.

I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, like I'm gonna believe that one," I said.

"He's interested in Esther Williams," Brittany said. She looked over at Kacie for support. "Esther and I were talking earlier today, and she showed me a bunch of text messages from Devyn. He said that he wasn't interested in you and wanted to...what did he say, Kacie?"

Kacie bit her lip. "He wanted to 'move on to greener pastures.'"

"I hate to break it to you, guys, but in Devyn's opinion, I'm the greenest pasture there ever was," I said, but I couldn't deny a twinge of concern in the back of my mind.

"Esther said she'd show you the texts if you didn't believe her," Kacie said. "We just didn't want you to get hurt."

I sighed long-sufferingly. "Uh-huh. Since when have you two ever cared about me?"

Brittany didn't say anything, but Kacie spoke right away. "We care about you because Britt and I realized that...well...we aren't exactly the nicest people to you, and you've always been there for us. I guess we feel guilty. Telling you about Devyn seemed like the right thing to do."

I opened the car door, even though the car was still slightly in motion. "Well, I'm seeing Devyn soon - tonight, hopefully. I'll ask him what's going on. Until then, I'd appreciate you two staying out of my business."

"Whatever," Brittany said.

"See ya!" Kacie called as I walked away.

Their car headed off in the opposite direction. I watched them drive away, vaguely worried.

"What did they want?" Cole asked.

I shook my head. "They just had some gossip to tell me," I said. "Nothing big." I forced a big smile onto my face. "Are you guys still ready for some ice cream?"
