You were my walking encyclopaedia

Lightning-speed answers to why’s and how’s

Questions shooting like fireworks

From the mouth of a child

To the man she thought

Knew better

You were my hot chocolate

On a cold and rainy day

A favourite child’s favourite thing

Sheltered behind the bars

Of your great arms as we watched

The world drifting by

Outside

Did you know my biggest wish

Was to grow up to be you?

No more, no less

Just the perfect father, the perfect man

Even though I am your daughter

And so that is quite

An impossibility

But I outgrew the encyclopaedia

Swapped hot chocolate for steaming coffee

Wrapped my wishes beneath quilts

Of childhood, worn, dusty, forgotten

And you were left behind in that world

Comforting, warm and loving

Yet pinned tightly by old-fashioned ideals

That clashed against my world

The world without you

What used to be sinful, now redeemed

The immoral turned casual

The rigid ties of tradition loosened

As the twenty first century rolled around

Unknowing words, you’re illiterate

In the etiquette of the new age

Spider-web bondage severed

When you told me the devil

Possessed my soul

The hero of my childhood

I wish you’d accept the truth

Stark reality’s not so harsh

If viewed from a different light

Please, daddy dearest

Won’t you just listen to me

Like you used to when I was

Yours?

Author guidance for This poem

HeyJude Collection of poetry from a prose writer :D

I recently discovered my love for free-verse, so here they are (most of them anyway xD). The occasion lyrics may be included as well.

1. Til I Can Make It On My Own
:
Inspired by a Billy Gilman song of the same title
2. Black Bird: Just some scribbling on a rainy day
3. Phoenix Reborn: My anger on the injustice of this world
4. Game of Thrones: Inspired through reading "The Other Boleyn Girl"
5. Charred Remains: Midnight scribble after reading something particularly depressing
6. Thousandth Crane: Lend your hands to make a difference, to grant a wish like the thousandth paper crane.
7. Drifting Sand: An extension on my branch of the same title in the Mini Saga challenge.
8. Misfit Republic: Take courage my dear, you know who you are.
9. Second Best: A mix of my confused feelings. I am so happy yet disappointed at the same time.
10. A Last Farewell: Inspired from watching the year twelves leaving school one last time under our outstretched arms.
11. Paradise of Strangers: From seeing the phrase off an article on the internet, I was reminded of the dread of starting a new school.
12. Rewind: Something I wish I've done.
13. Mortal Atlas: The stress of chosing a career had finally done me in.
14. A Friend In Me: Inspired by the Toy Story song of the same name, as well as my own experience.
15. Hurts like Heaven: Inspired by seeing the name of the new Coldplay song.
16. Girl in the Mirror: Because many of us have moments like this.
17. Seasons: Just another rainy day poem
18. Muted Greys: People watching and thinking of how close we are to complete dystopia (for me it's losing our identities)
19. Cellophane: Another poem about heartbreak
20. Come Home: Why destroy lives when we have the capacity to heal it?
21. Only Time: Inspired through reading "The Memory Keeper's Daughter". A poem through Paul's perspective.
22. Want: The desperate wanting to break free from the way a person's being viewed.
23. Under the Light: Inspired after reading "A Streetcar Named Desire". This is Blanche's story.
24. Behind the Numbers: Please darling, never again. I need you to know that I love you with all my heart, and so does countless others.
25. Salt: Inspired upon seeing a photograph of a footprints in the sand and thinking "How alike it is to Braille - a kind of special writing that tells a story"
26. In Sharpie Ink: Inspired upon hearing the line "My war paint is Sharpie ink" from Kimya Dawson's Loose Lips. I reworded the line and changed the concept though.
27. Asylum in the Rain: Inspired upon reading a beautiful description of cigarette smoke as "blue curls", and the rest unfolded from there.
28. Intricate Threads: Inspired by looking at spider webs. Haven't written freeverse in a while so it may not be at its best.
29. Spun Sugar: Inspired from seeing a pastry wrapped in spun sugar at a Greek cafe.
30. Plunge Into The Deep: An expansion on my branch in the Mini Saga Challenge called "A Deep Breathe".
31. Blue Porcelain: Inspired by the many cups of tea I've had since we're allowed a common room. But taking myself into this future had made me ever so sad...
32. Moth Wings: Another poeam inspired by 'A Streetcar Named Desire'. I think I may be a little obsessed with the character of Blanch DuBois.
33. Greyscale World: Inspired by the prompt "Simple Smile".
34. The Shadow: Inspired by a picture seen in English class, and the notion of being a shadow: an observer on the sidelines.
35. To Heaven: Spur of the moment poetry, I guess you can probably see the source that prompted me.
36. Tangled: Experimenting with something new, it's something of lyrics to a song heard only in my head. Maybe one day there'll be accompanying music.
37. Taste Like Regret: I heard the line from a song on the radio, and couldn't resist.
38. Hero: This is NOT about me and my Dad, my father is amazingly wonderful on the contrary and he is still very much my hero. But this poem was inspired by a song on the radio.
39. Torn Flag: Another love poem, this time inspired partially by Adele's songs.
40. Narcotized: Inspired by both the notion of "narcotized tranquility" from Streetcar, and the feeling of bubbles burning my throat as I drank a gulp of champagne last night.
41. Dancing Flame: Adding to the guidance under request from UponAtlas :) Inspired by both the line "edge of heaven" and from stalking through my friend's 18th photos.
42. Empty Film Canister: Inspired by said line
43. My Fairytale Princess: Inspired by my beautiful mother, she is the best Mum i could've ever asked for. Not my best, but it says what I need it to: "I <3 you Mum"
